Abstract
This essay analyses the continuous attraction and fascination that Christopher Columbus has generated in cinema, as well as the cinematic representation of the validity of the myth and legend of Columbus. Through a brief historiographic examination of the diverse depictions of Columbus in film –from the early short Cristophe Colomb (Vincent Lorant Heilbronn, 1904) to Even the Rain (Icíar Bollaín, 2010)– the author reviews the variety of perspectives from which cinema has approached this figure, from hero and genius, to slave-driving villain and even promoter of genocide, illustrating the complexity associated with achieving an accurate portrait of the historical and human condition of the character.Downloads
