Abstract

Cinematographic heritage—once awareness about the artistic value of cinema has been raised—consists of films that have been recovered and sheltered in film libraries and archives. There they are stored, preserved, catalogued and repaired. In addition, dissemination is encouraged and research is carried out. This is the case of the Österreichisches Filmmuseum (Austrian Museum of Cinema) in Vienna, whose head manager Alexander Horwarth is a film critic and writer. This interview will revolve around the preservation of the above-mentioned heritage, in relation to the recently found passage of Josef von Sternberg’s film The case of Lena Smith (1929). Concerning this movie, Horwarth and Michael Omastra published a book where a reconstruction of the same is suggested.
