Abstract
A new generation of benshi, silent film narrators, has recently appeared in Japan. This activity is still important and taking place within the country, as can be drawn from this interview with Ichirô Kataoka, a professional benshi who does research and collects voiced recordings of this tradition taken during the golden age of silent films, as well as films and other materials he uses as a basis to write articles about the benshi history and world. Fully integrated in the vast silent film industry in Japan, he has also participated in various film festivals in Europe and other parts of the world. From the hand of Kataoka-san we will discover the details and mysteries of the art of being a benshi.
