Abstract

Peripheral films take up a space as wide as the African, Asian and Latin-American continents. Cinematographically speaking, the line that separates the central countries from the periphery is the same as the one that separates the North from the South. The study on the other cinematographic half nowadays means a work in progress on which several experts have embarked in the last few years, standing out Guadalupe Arensburg, Alberto Elena, Jaime Pena and Antonio Weinrichter. Their views fit in the discussions and are centred on these topics: the accurate denominations to refer to these kind of films; the possible renewal of contemporary cinema regarding the peripheral films; the questioning of the traditional cinematographic historiography —Euro-North-American—, that means the knowledge on Third Cinema and the possibility of making the eclipsed films more visible; the critical parameters by which the great amount of Southern films has to be judged; and the possibility of making a non-occidental canon of worldwide cinema. Finally, a text analyses the place peripheral and emerging cinemas occupy regarding globalization and transnational films.
