Abstract

What is Level Five? Is it a videogame that challenges the spectator? Above all, it is an exciting film-puzzle in which literature, cinema, state-of-the-art technology and, in short, individual and collective memory are contained. It is impossible to understand this Chris Marker film completely, as it would be the same mistake as trying to explain somebody’s emotions and feelings. Once the first images of the film appear, the only thing that can be done is letting oneself go as if it were the spiral staircase that leads to the tower from which Madeleine falls down, or the labyrinthic spiral in which James Stewart and Kim Novak seem to fall in Vertigo. Once again, everything seems to lay among the dead.
