Abstract
Unlike other Marvel superheroes, Captain America never enjoyed a steady popularity. He has gone through more conceptual transformations than most Marvel characters. The latest film adaptation, Captain America: the First Avenger (Joe Johnston, 2011) is a good example of this idea. The film erases all Captain America’s versions between 1941 and 2011 and gets him closer to the new fans. This essay proposes an overview of Captain America’s trajectory and demonstrates how Joe Johnston’s film succeeds at its aims.
